Michael J. Teter
I became a lawyer because I believe that the law provides an incredible avenue to make a difference. Since graduating from Yale Law School, I’ve spent my career pursuing causes that mattered to me. I’m trained in civil litigation, civil rights, constitutional law, election and campaign finance law, appellate law, and employee rights. I have championed my clients’ causes in both criminal and civil matters, including in complex civil cases, constitutional litigation, and antidiscrimination suits. I also have taught constitutional law, statutory interpretation, administrative law, and election law at the University of Utah and Pomona College, and was a teaching fellow and supervising attorney at Georgetown Law. I’ve represented clients before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Ninth and Tenth Circuits, and in federal and state courts and agencies in Utah, California, and Washington State.
These experiences inform all of my work, whether in fighting for my client’s rights or advising mission-driven nonprofits, educational institutions, and political organizations.

I worked at several nonprofits before deciding to become a lawyer. As an attorney, I’ve focused on assisting people who are trapped within our immigration system, primarily in the realm of deportation defense, asylum, and affirmative cases for adjustment of status, naturalization, and immigrant visas. I have represented clients in federal and state courts, as well as before administrative agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Outside of the immigration context, I have experience in a broad array of matters, including First Amendment appeals, civil litigation, and juvenile proceedings, working in private practice, government, and for nonprofit organizations. .
I am fluent in Spanish, and am an avid runner, knitter, and traveler.
